What's It About?

The story begins in the Arctic when Cabin Boy Mel finds something strange trapped in the ice: it’s Eve Frankenstein no less, daughter of the monster. The unscrupulous crew of the Albatross take the pair of them to London to sell to Queen Victoria, who has developed an obsession with monsters. There’s definitely something fishy going on in Buckingham Palace, and the Queen’s creepy butler has a peculiar influence over his queen. It’s up to Mel, Evie and an assorted bunch of monsters to save the Empire! Mel and co make a great gang, and their Victorian adventures are rip-roaring stuff.

Your Reviews

Alisha from Calverley c of e school :

I did not like it,it was my least favorite book out of them all😔. It was not very interesting. I thought I would not like it from the cover and I did not😱. I didn't enjoy it at all. I thought it was a bit childish because it had mythical creatures that most children

9-11 get bored when reading something with them in.

Alisha gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Asha from Calverley C of E :

This book was different. It was my least favourite book and I did not enjoy it. It was quite boring for me but it does not mean it is a bad book for others. It involved monsters so I would recommend it to people who like that type of fantasy stories!! 📓📓📓📓😁😁😁😁

Asha gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 1 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Emily from Calverley c of e primary:

Personally I did not particularly like this book I thought it was quite boring.Other people might like this but sorry Julia Golding it did not appeal to me. But I would say never say never.⭐️⛵️

Martha from Calverly C of E:

This book was very very unusual yet it was not my type for the following reasons : There was too much going on and it was hard to follow; It didn't explain some things and some characters. I would not recommend this to people who like a good explained story with an interesting background. I also think it wasn't suitable for my age considering all of the fantasy characters . I didn't think the pirates fit into modern London The only parts I enjoyed about it was certain scenes that only lasted for half a chapter. (There were not many of those parts). This book was just not my type but doesn't mean it won't be for others.

Martha gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Tayyeb from Allerton C of E primary school#:

I found this book slightly boring because it just kept repeating the same goal over and over. Also, the action wasn't that interesting as it only went on for about 20 pages. However, I liked the different unique superpowers that each of the characters had. Overall, i enjoyed this book in some parts and didn't in others.

Freya from Shire Oak C of E primary school:

Mel Foster and the Demon Butler. I thought was just a bit dull because nothing interesting really happens, even though the story does improve at the end. What I like about the book is tat it switches between the Queen or the Royal Place and what is happening with Mel and his friends. The main characters are Mel, Eve, Lady Dracula. I would recommend this book to people who are 8 years and older because the author has a lot of imagination.

Freya gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Ella from Crossly street primary school:

I enjoyed this book in parts, sometimes the author introduced the characters whithout an explanation of who they were though. They described what they looked like, in fantastic description, but we weren't told very much about them. My favourite character was Mel because of his bravery and courage. I liked the plot and the description best. Although sometimes you could get lost in the text, but you eventually found you way back into the story-line.

Ella gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Charlie from Alwoodley Primaty:

It was ok but was slow and I thought it could of been better. My favourite character was Mel foster but I thought the cover could be more appealing. I'd recommend this book to people who like historical books. But not to people who like fast-paced books and characters that have a more modern background. It looks like an easy book to read, however it is full of unfamiliar words and references to Dickens novels.

Charlie gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Maryam from Alwoodley Primary School:

Katarina from Adel Primary School:

This book was very amusing but I found the actual plot line very cheesy and I did not enjoy the brief descriptions as much as I like longer descriptions. I had trouble picturing anyone in the book and I had to rely on the pictures quite a bit.

Katarina gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Jayna from Adel Primary School:

I really liked the idea behind this book;however,I found the actual story a bit tacky and quite predictable. I liked the characters but I think they could be described in a bit more detail as I like longer descriptions.

Alice from St'Margarets:

To me Julia Golding worked wonders with her charecters putting a twist into her plot here and there to make sure it was always moving along. GRACE from WESTGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL:

Mel Foster and the Demon Butler was a good book yet I found it a bit dull and repetitive. If you like a book jam packed with adventure then this is great for you. When Mel Foster discovers a giantess named Eve in a great big block of ice, he is stunned. Eve kindly helps them out of the ice they were stuck in. They make their way to London where the queen's new butler is on a hunt for monsters to present to her majesty. Mel and Eve are constantly on he move as they try to escape the capture of themselves.

Well done Julia Golding, it just wasn't for me.

Robbie from Green Lane Primary Academy:

This book is about a boy named Mel Foster who is stuck in a block of ice on a trapped ship. He then finds a living creature frozen in ice. Later on at Buckingham Palace, the queens butler is evil and it is up to Mel to stop him.

The book wasn't really for me. Although it was a good story I just couldn't focus on any character as there were so many in one scene.

Robbie gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Téa from ST.Francis Primary School Morley:

I thought this book was boring in most parts! That is why I gave it a 2. At first I thought it was going to be a really exiting when Eve the monster was found but then I thought it went on a bit and it didn't really appeal to me. I didn't really enjoy it!!!

Téa gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

I didn't like this book because it was boring and I thought it was more for boys than girls. It includes monsters which I don't really like as storybook characters. I didn't like the time it was set in. I thought it was old fashioned. The start didn't really drag me in and make me want to read more. I thought it would get more exciting, but it didn't. This is due to the fact that she is so brave and loyal and that she has this awesome motto" I AM EVE FRANKENSTEIN. I AM BEAUTIFUL. I AM LOVED. KNOWBODY CALLS ME MONSTER! " I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries.

Kieran gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Kieran from Raynville Primary School:

I loved this book as it has a range of fantastic characters, but my favourite character would have to be Eve. This is due to the fact that she is so brave and loyal to Mel and that she also has this awesome saying: "I AM EVE FRANKENSTEIN. I AM BEAUTIFUL. I AM LOVED. NO ONE CALLS ME MONSTER!"

Zack from Otley All Saints:

I do like the storyline about the monsters and that Eve protects Mel from the ship`s crew when they try to capture Eve by hurting him. Mr Burlington seems pretty mean, with Mr Copperfield a nice, frail old man...

Zack gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Katy from Pudsey Waterloo Primary School :

I didn't really get this book at first because I read it too fast. I get it a lot better now because I read the lines twice. This book has really good tension when Mel Foster gets put in that claustrophobic box. I really liked that part. This book is amazing!

Oliver from East Garforth Primary Acadimy:

I like this book because its confusing and jumps in to the story with no background information. I rate this book 4 out of 5 for its mystery story type which I love in books but if it had more mythical creatures and suspense I would rate it 5 of 5 stars.

Oliver gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

yusuf gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Billie-may from Sacred heart Catholic primary school :

I didn't like this book because you didn't know who was who at the beginning of the book, and I like books that introduce the character first. However,I did like the description and how you described the surroundings a lot!

Billie-may gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Daniel from Westgate Primary School:

I didn't find Mel Foster and the Demon Butler an interesting read so I didn't finish it. This means that I don't know the plot fully, but I will tell you what I know.

Mel Foster is an orphan who is told he has to go on a boat trip to the Artic. However, when the boat gets stuck in a block of ice, the crew find Eve Frankenstein (daughter of Frankenstein) frozen in it. She walks over to Mel,not to hurt him but to protect him. That's as far as I got.

I didn't like this book as it didn't have very good vocabulary and the plot seemed too far fetched. The story seemed to jump about too much.

Therefore, I have only given it 1 out of 5 and I wouldn't recommend it.

Daniel gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 1 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Giaan from Weetwood Primary School:

The beginning of the book was a bit slow-paced but as you went along it got deeper and deeper and deeper. It was not my cup of tea since I like horror/murder/gory books. The monsters were a bit boring (like the start) and it was lacking scariness for me. Sorry Julia Golding this book really is not for me!:(

Giaan gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Anam from Alwoodley Primary School:

I started reading this book and it is, so far, awesome! I havent finished this yet but its really good! I would recommend this book to ages 9 to 13 because at some points I needed to pull out a dictionary. I would rate this book 5 star out of 5!

Anam gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Jihan from Alwoodley Primary School:

I found this book really exciting, even though the only fantasy/monster book is Harry Potter. One of the reasons I love this book is because it is very related to other classic stories such as 'Frankenstein','Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and'Dracula'.

This book is EPIC

Jihan gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Jackson from Alwoodley primary school :

I really enjoyed this book also it's quite hard to read because the language is set in the Victorian times so the jokes are quite old and weird however it's awesome and enjoyable as well as anything else. Plus I recommend to read it and I would think only 9 and over should read it because like I said so its quite hard to read. read it because it's amazing.

I loved it so much that i might have read it when I should have been in bed, hopefully Mel Foster completes her mission with Eve, but the Demond Butler is in there way whahahaha!!!! personally I think the first line is really entertaining, the director of the orphanage predicted that Mel would come to a bad end!!!

Laura from Thorner c of e primary school:

This was an enjoyable book but I thought the start didnt resemble the rest of the book, apart from that it was really enjoyable and it embarked you on a great journey. I also really liked the character Cain he wasn't at all like his brother. There wasn't much action but there was a lot of adventure but the title does not really (like the start) resemble the book either. This book I thought was lacking a bit of action but all in all it was an enjoyable book.

Laura gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

My favourite character was eve because she was adventurous and I liked her little quote 'I'm Eve Frankenstein. I'am beautiful. I'am loved. No one calls me a monster.'

Liam from White Laith Primary School:

Their are many features of the book I absolutely loved : like the personality of the 'monsters' because instead of being the stereotypical murder machine , they were protective , servant like creatures who just want to help. Another detail I could admire was the fact that the setting and surroundings were fully described. The only thing to be changed could maybe be more humour even though it is supposed to be eerie. I recommend this to 9-11 year olds with a taste for adventure.

Liam gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Anna from Otley all saints:

I only read the beginning of Mel Foster and the Demon Butler as I am not in the Leeds Book Awards group but from what I read it was really good! It puts you into the story straight away and you have to try and work out what is happening but after the first 3 to 4 pages I found it really exciting. From what I read it was looking like it was going to keep going up and getting even more exciting! Overall a super read! Have a good mystery adventure. I give this a 5/5!

Helena from Green Lane Primary Academy :

Mel foster and the demon butler is a great and interesting book.

I rated this book a 4 out of 5 because it was a bit confusing the first few times it switched characters point of view.

In this story there is a young boy called Melchizadek Foster who has to save London from the queens new butler. The butler has an evil plan to take over the British Empire with the help of his master (the inventor.)

Personally my favourite character was Eve Frankenstein because she wasn't trying to harm anyone; all she wanted to do was protect Mel. This is my favourite quote: "I am Eve Frankenstein. I am beautiful. I am loved. No one calls me monster!"

Helena gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Joseph gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Abi from Green Lane Primary Academy:

Mel Foster and the demon butler is a great book, I personally like Eve Frankenstein and her emotive stand-up sentence"I am beautiful, I am loved and no one calls me monster." The things that could be changed are the sailors language it could be shortened and the some pages (chapters) go on about one thing a little bit too long but then changes on to something different that hasn't been mentioned on a page then goes back and forth. The things I like about the book are the tension for example when the captain tries to lore Eve into a box by pretending to shoot Mel on the foot then thrents Mel if Eve doesn't come with him then next time it will be real pain.I like Eve because she's very different, nice and talented. To me I thought she would be like all the other frankenstein's but I was wrong,Eve was unexpectedly French but also knew english and one other language. She is brave, intelligent, friendly and wondrous plus she doesn't hurt or kill people or animals . I think this book should be read because it is truly good book.

Abi gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Julie Golding made a really good job of writing this book. It's action packed with loads of different characters. My favourite character in this book was Eve the giantess who got dug up out of a lump of ice in the North Pole and brought to life by Mel. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

James gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 5 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Harry from Green Lane Primary Academy:

I rate this book a two because at the start I was enjoying it, but at the end I became uninterested and bored. However, I liked the characters: Mel and Eve. At the beginning Eve was creepy, but I got more used to the illustrations of her. Mel was my favourite character because he's brave and adventurous. I couldn't really pronounce Mel's real name, Melchizadek Foster. I think I'll enjoy the other books. This book is mysterious and weird, I still like Eve because of her strength. I partially enjoyed this book. My favourite part is when the ladies in dresses come. I hope others like and enjoy this book more than I did.

Harry gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

I rated this book 3 stars because it is very heavy going. Also, it starts OK and then it rises to great near the end, whereas I think it should start great and then get even better. This book is very descriptive and immersing but it isn't a WOW book to me. I think it will be great for others but it is just not my type of style.

Matthew gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Danielle from GreenLanePrimaryAcademy:

Monsters are not always bad you know!

Welcome to the world of super monsters where you meet: cabin boy Mel, Eve Frankenstein and many others. Queen Victoria is obsessed with monsters and she can't stop looking for them. However is Buckingham palace all what it seems there's a creepy butler and he's in background hatching plans. Now it's up to Mel and Eve to save the day.

This book was certainly not for me. I read it twice but unfortunately the fog-like plot wasn't getting any clearer . Personally I didn't enjoy the fist 3 chapters as it was hard to understand and didn't make sense. Although it did have a few twists which I enjoyed.

My favorite character was Eve as she stands up for Mel even when things go wrong. Eve is a funny loving Chara and caring for people

Danielle gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Oliver from Calverly CE primary school:

Sarah from Green Lane Primary Academy:

Mel Foster and the Demon Butler is a story about an ordinary boy named [ Melchizedek Foster ] who finds an unusual creature in a block of ice. When they found out that the Queen's chief butler [ Mister Burlington ] is hatching a secret plan to sell the Queen, the determined team have to stop him from doing so.

My favorite character is Evie Frankenstein, as she supported Mel in every step of the journey. The story was full of suspense ; it made me think who was in the block of ice. The mysterious scenes were my favorite, as it made me think ahead of the story.

However, it was little bit confusing at the beginning of the book, but as I kept on turning the pages in got more exciting and interesting. Overall, I think the book was quite good.

I recommend this book for readers, who like adventure stories, as it has a lot of exciting and fun adventures.

Sarah gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

leon from holy family catholic primary shcool:

Over all I liked this book because it was action packed. I only liked from chapter six to nine, where as the others where not that interesting.I think the charecters could have more features to them.I think this book could be improved by making the chapters not that detailed and more action in it them.

leon gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

leah from beeston primary:

Firstly it was boring but then i got hooked.it is good for people who like mystery books. When i saw this book it didn't look interesting but it turned out to be amazing. The chapters are really long so that's what i didn't like.

Ella-Rois from Holy Family Catholic Primary School:

In my opinion the chapters were to long and it seemed like two people were writing the book because there were some really exciting bits and some boring bits.I liked how the author included Charles Dickens characters for example Jacob Marley. Also Julia used some really hard words: Melchizedek. The book had really good language and vocabulary. Unfrotunately the book was just not for me.For younger readers who like adveturous books, this would really suit them. One of the downsides was that i could not relate to the characters and picture them in my mind.

Ella-Rois gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

I absolutely loved this book! Julia Golding has done so well on writing this book. It's exciting, thrilling AND scary all at the same time. The first sentence fills you with emotion and in the next sentence makes you feel sympathetic for Mel Foster. The pictures at the beginning of each chapter make you feel want to read more. You DO NOT want to put it down!

Molly gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Abigail from Holy Family Catholic Primary School:

In my oppinion the book had a very slow start chapters were very long detiled and the book was exaggerating at some points. Some parts of the book got a bit carried away.I found that i couldnt understand some things for example melchizedek. Some of the book was boring and some of the book was exciting when it got to the main point the book went of on a tangent, this made it feel like there were two writers. This book would be a good adventure for a younger child but they would struggle to read it.One thing I did enjoy about this book is that it had realistic characters in it like Jacob Marley and Eve (Frankinstien.)Overall this is not my type of book.I prefer non fiction books, with a true story in them.I hope this advise helps you. I know somebody will like this book but not me im not keen on this book.

Abigail gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

niamh from holy family catholic pimary school:

In my opininion this is not my type of book because it had a slow start but got very interesting when it got to the main point, including other characters from other childrens stories was very intreeging. Overall I think that this book's chapters were too long and the book did go off in a tangent and was very confusing. This would be a great book for a younger child but they would have a hard time reading the english.

Raichel from Holy Family Catholic Primary School:

I had mixed emotions about this book it had some great parts but I found some parts were not interesting or boring.

The book had a slow start but became more fun toward the main point. It had very cool characters that were interesting but they were too fictional for me to relate to making me feel distant from the characters.

The book needs to have shorter chapters because when I tried to read in my head I got lost or confused. I had to read out load to take it in. One good point about it is that it included characters from other books but sadly some of those characters names were to hard to read even for an 11 year old.

The book jumped the shark to much and told us all sorts of unimportant tings. Over all I didn't enjoy the book and was slightly disappointing.

Raichel gave Mel Foster and the Demon Butler 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Zuzanna from Holy Family Catholic Primary School:

In my opinion I think that the chapters are too long but I like that the author used different names from different peoples books. The book was interesting but at the same time boring. I think that the book would be interesting for little children because there's monsters and mysterious situation but they will have a hard time reading it because of the language used also the book jumped the shark too much and told us all diffrent sorts of things.

In my opinion the author should look at the book ones again and mayabe change it a bit and make it more exciting. over all this book is not my type even though it is advetures.

Eve from Southroyd primary and nursery school:

I liked this book because it is very adventurous and always wants to make you read on. I would recommend this book for 10-13 year olds ; it hasblots of complicated language.Due to their ability to transform appearance,my favourite chatacters are the twins (Abel and Cain). However sometimes the speech and paragraphs seemed to lack in cohesion and went on too long.

When I started reading this book, I wasn't so sure I was going to enjoy it but all of a sudden, I found myself hook. I had so many different predictions going through my mind as I was reading ( none of them were right). I loved the way the author included characters from other stories; very clever.
