Who Wrote It?

Katherine Rundell is the author of Rooftoppers, The Girl Savage and The Wolf Wilder. She grew up in Zimbabwe, Brussels, and London, and is currently a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. She begins each day with a cartwheel and believes that reading is almost exactly the same as cartwheeling: it turns the world upside down and leaves you breathless. In her spare time, she enjoys walking on tightropes and trespassing on the rooftops of Oxford colleges!

What's It About?

Feodora and her mother live in the snowbound woods of Russia, in a house full of food and fireplaces. Ten minutes away, in a ruined chapel, lives a pack of wolves. Feodora's mother is a wolf wilder, and Feo is a wolf wilder in training. A wolf wilder is the opposite of an animal tamer: it is a person who teaches tamed animals to fend for themselves, and to fight and to run, and to be wary of humans. When the murderous hostility of the Russian Army threatens her very existence, Feo is left with no option but to go on the run. What follows is a story of revolution and adventure, about standing up for the things you love and fighting back. And, of course, wolves.

Fact File

Katherine’s father was a great storyteller narrating stories from history: the World Wars, the slave trade and the Russian revolution. The Wolf Wilder is a book built by those early stories: a fairy-tale kind of adventure informed by history.

Feo, more than any other character she’s written, is how she felt as a child: awkward and wary, but hoping always for friendship and for snow. The plot was made up of things she’d seen or discovered and loved.

The wilding of animals is a real thing: there is a programme in Zimbabwe, not far from where Katherine spent part of her childhood, where tame lions are taught to feed themselves. And in Yellowstone Park they are trying to coax wolves back into the wild.

Your Reviews

Tara from Ossett Academy & Sixth Form College:

I both liked and disliked this book. On one hand, the sense of adventure was brilliant and I loved the atmosphere with the harsh weather and Feo being connected to the wolves. On the other, for the time period it was set in, it didn't seem that believable. The language was too modern for then, and the ending seemed too predictable and easy. Some parts I enjoyed, whereas others were a bit dull and childish for my literature taste.

Tara gave The Wolf Wilder 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Raheem from Leeds East Academy:

I loved this book, I hope the author gets a Award for this book.

Raheem gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Yasmine from Benton Park Secondary School:

This is about Feo, a budding wolf wilder, that’s on a journey to help save her mother from the Russian authorities and she meets people to aid her journey along the way.

This book received a LOT of positive comments and praises from my friends which raised the expectation of the book for me, however when I read it it did not receive the same praises as my friends, maybe due to the expectation. Despite that it was still a book with an interesting plot and I still liked it. The sad bits did break my heart because the wolves were innocent and I got attached to them.

I give this book 4/5 and I recommend it to people who likes animals and thrilling adventures.

Yasmine gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

daniel from bentonpark:

i found this book really easy to read and really enjoyably.

Becky from Leeds East Academies:

On the first page you could really tell what it is all about. It was so interesting that I had to read half the book before I could put it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!A great structure of the book!!

Becky gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Luke from King James's School:

This book is about a girl called Feo who works with her mother to try and un-tame wolves but it soon turns into an action packed adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat (or whatever you’re sitting on).

My favourite character was Feo because she was determined to get what she wants no the cost. The characters did feel real to me because it was based around an event that actually happened in the past. This story kept me guessing because I never knew what they were going to do next. My favourite part of the book was when she met Ilya because it was a brilliant re-creation of friendship that Katherine Rundell made. I think the parts when Feo was with the wolves were written well because it showed how wolves would react to certain types of problems. This book wasn’t funny or sad enough to make me laugh or cry. This book did keep me turning the pages because I wanted to know what their next plan was going to be.

I think the author could have made the ending more detailed because the book was going well with a lot of detail of what they were going to do then (in my opinion) it suddenly stopped and just went into little detail at a vital bit in the story.

Overall I think that this was a great read-if I had to sum it up in three words they would be;

Enjoyable

Mysterious

Thrilling

I would recommend this book to animal lovers and 12-14 year olds so they’re not too young or too old to enjoy this book.

Luke gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Maria from The Morley Academy:

I loved the book,it was very good and inspirational.I Love Feo as a character because she is very brave and determined to punish Rakov. liked this book a lot because I could understand the words said in Russian because I can speak it and it was very interesting.

Maria gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

William from King James's school:

When I first saw this book I thought I would dislike it but it surprised me how much I enjoyed reading 'Wolf Wilder' I liked the character Ilya because he was loyal to Feo and went with her instead of going to learn ballet. I didn't like the character Alexie as all he thought about was his revolution and this meant we didn't care as much about his friends.

William gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Isabelle from Prince Henry's grammar school:

I thought this book was sound and a bit of a on of the edge of your chair books and is very good for the age group it aimed at. But the book isn't really my kind of book and I feel the biginning is a bit rushed so that's the only reason it isn't a 5 out of 5.

Isabelle gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

daniyal from Roundhay High school:

The Wolf Wilder is an amazing book and it's so tempting that makes you just want to read on and finish the book!

The main character is Feodora, better known as Feo. She is very brave and is caring for everybody. She loves the wolves and is training to be a wolf wilder.

daniyal gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Amir from Roundhay high school:

I could clearly understand what was happening. when I started reading the book I could not stop.

everyone should read this amazing tail.

Jake from King James's School:

I really loved The Wolf Wilder.

I could understand all the characters emotions, for one thing, and I could picture every character in my head (the marvellous illustrations helped with that though).

The book had me gripped from the very beginning, and there were parts in the story that I just couldn’t put down.

The whole book was very fast paced and it is one of those stories you could just sit down on the sofa on an afternoon and just read.

I confess, I am not one for the kind of fairy tale sought of plot or genre but this book is so good I would put it as one of the best books I have read in my short life.

A good thing about The Wolf Wilder is that it gives you enough description to see the character or surroundings in a silhouette outline but it leaves it for you to imagine the rest, granted, there are a small selection books that dwell on describing things and get away with it like To Kill A Mockingbird but a lot can bore you out of your wits.

The only thing I have a problem with is that I like a bit of blood and gore even in my fairy tales, and, apart from the occasional wolf being shot there was not much else. I wish that you could have seen Rakov’s death with chunks coming out of his arm and all.

Apart from that the book was full of wonder, imagination, hope and emotion. The book is definitely a tough competitor for this year’s title of Leeds Book Awards 2016.

Jake gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Elisabetta from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

Christian from Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School:

I particularly found this book extremely exciting and each paragraph made me eager to read on that it surprised me when i had finally closed the book. I highly recommend people in this age group to read this book. It would be a great way to explore your imagination.

Christian gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Becca from Abbey Grange Academy:

This is an exciting and an adventurous book that is set in past Russia. It is about a girl called Feo, who works as a 'wolf wilder'. Unfortunately the government doesn't like this so try to capture her. This is quite an adventurous book and I liked the imagery that the author created. Furthermore I think that the illustrations were effective. However I thought that the ending was slightly rushed and there was big chunks of time missing out of the story.

Becca gave The Wolf Wilder 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charlie from Abbey Grange Academy:

Λ very emotional book; it makes you agree with Feo and her decisions throughout. It is very well written and makes you feel that Rakov should die.

I specifically enjoy the ending, which I shall not reveal.

Λπ amazing read overall, I would recommend this to anyone.

Charlie gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Lucy from Benton Park:

It is a lovely story following the life of Feodora when her job becomes threatened by the Russians. it is a touching story that has lots of twists to the tale making it an interesting read for me.

It has made me realize that fantasy, Si Fi and action and adventure are not the only books that I like.

I would recommend this book to anyone no matter what book they like and to the age range of 11-14.

It is an amazing book that interested me all the way through.i was really sad to finish the book.

Lucy gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Alice from King James's School:

The Wolf Wilder is an action-packed, emotional book that is impossible to put down. I really liked the character of Feo because of her determination to save her mother and the way she never stopped trying, even when it seemed impossible to carry on. I also really enjoyed reading about the wolves and I love how loyal they are whilst still being free and not having to obey anyone. This book is beautifully written and even made me cry at one point. The Wolf Wilder is my favourite book on the list that I have read so far and I found it magical, unique and overall, brilliant.

Alice gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

soufia from alertn grange:

a great read could not put it down. great effective words and its was very fast and intense.

one of the best books.

soufia gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Lloyd from King James's School:

Whilst reading Wolf Wilder I really liked the wide variety of characters, from Feo, the girl who lives with wolves, Sergei, the over-excited eight year old and Ilya, the ballet dancing soldier.

This book made me feel mixed emotions; sadness because of the unfortunate events that occurred along the journey; excitement and joy as Feo got closer and closer to meeting her goal; suspense – would Rakov find Feo and punish her? Would Feo find her mother?

I found Rakov a formidable foe, his hatred towards the Petrovnas and the wolves made me fear for their safety; his character was so real, I believed in him.

I won’t spoil it for anybody because this book is so amazing; the ending had me relieved and emotional. This book definitely has my vote.

Lloyd gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Anika from King James's School:

I really likes the book: very mesmerising and eventful. The story line was unlike any other and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The true love and passion towards the wolves are clearly marked out and many others can relate on having that same feeling. The characters were well thought out: my favourite character in particular was Marina (Feo's mother) although she wasn't one of the main characters- I could sense she was brave, loving, intelligent and proud which gave me a real insight to her body features and what she perhaps did in the meantime when she wasn't included in the story. She was an inspiration to me. General Rakov made my blood boil and the way Katherine Rundell written him as a character (to make me despise him that much) was incredible. The other characters were superb too.

The illustrations were a pleasant surprise as most of the books I read don't have them.

I think The Wolf Wilder presents that the things that are important and meaningful in life are worth fighting for because we love them/it. We need to be loyal as well, I also thought it included courage through tough moments.

I was glad to find out there was no romance or relationships between Feodora and the boys (Ilya and Alexei) as I thought if the ending might've been different it would've been clichè. Most books have romance featured whether it's subtle or a large amount. I was satisfied that this book wasn't in the long list of romance novels.

If there was a second account on one of the other characters- perhaps the wolves would've been an amusing choice- it would've been nice to just switch things up.

The Wolf Wilder was amazing and I think you will adore the book as much as I do!

Anika gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Jamie from Roundhay School:

I thought that the wolf Wilder was a gripping book; whenever I read it I just couldn't put it down. I liked it because the storyline was interesting and it was unlike anything I have ever read before. It wasn't really my genre but I still enjoyed it. It followed a girl in northern Russia who lived with her mum and a pack of wolves who was learning to be a wolf wilder. With a group of men who were concerned about the girls safety round the wolves; she encountered many problems.

Jamie gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Vevila from Allerton High School:

This book was very unusual but it was interesting. I felt sad when many life-shattering events took place and I wonder how Feo could cope with what was going on. Feodora is very determined and loves her family. She soon makes loads of new friends and they help her take down The evil General Rakov.

Vevila gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Elpida from Corpus Chrsti Catholic College:

This amazing page turner really griped me which resulted in me reading 100 pages everyday. Foedora is such a courageous and fierce character that makes you what to pity her because of these tragic events however she still ploughs through and in the end is victorious. I would honestly love it if this book won and I hope I can one day meet the author.

Elpida gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Raheem from Leeds East Academy.:

This book is Amazing and Superb I read the first page and I got sucked in to a world of Adventure, Mystery and Survival. I recommend this book to everyone to likes Adventure and Survival books.

Raheem gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Abigail from Benton Park`:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had the feel of a classic book but with a modern twist. The story-line was interesting and the book was fast paced which meant the book wasn't boring. The pictures accompanying the book were beautifully drawn and were not too overbearing and didn't give away too much of the book.

Abigail gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Scott from King James's school:

In an astonishingly fairytale fashion, Katherine Rundell has created something extraordinary. Feo's connection with her wolves is something I have yet to see rivalled by any other book. In a time when the fantasy and fairytale genres are have such a busy marketplace in which to compete, I am surprised that someone has managed to create a book with such a niche due to the connection with nature. It is artfully done and written.

This book was enjoyable and I certainly hope that it has paved the way for others like it. In places it was even amusing, something I don't usually get in my choices of reading material. Set in the type of oppressed background I tend to like, the plot is one that fits perfectly with the harsh, snowy and very Russian surroundings and the dicatorship of the "Tsar" and the evil and most definitely psychotic General Rakov. I rather liked the character of Alexi, who stood up for his people and what he believed. I found his "resistance of the children" (as I like to think of it) quite inventive and witty on the author's part.

The one rather drastic aspect of this book (for me that is, I'm sure other people don't realise or mind) that bugged me was the fact that I had no idea at what point in history, the future or some unreal version of our world it was in. I felt that this could have been exemplified. I must say that it frustrated me somewhat. This is, by the way, just me being me, I take absolutely no credit from the author because of it, I'm just very picky about this kind of thing. To make it clear: this is not Katherine Rundell's fault.

Anyway, despite this, I did enjoy the book. Infact, I quite like a book that makes me think as this one did. Unfortunately though, I did fret about it quite a lot, whether I had missed something. A thought-provoking read (as you can probably tell).

Scott gave The Wolf Wilder 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Lihem from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved how courageous the girl is and shows a different side of how a wolf might be described or treated like in the real world.I would really recommend this to those who like adventures.

Lihem gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Aniqah from Allerton Grange High School:

The wolf wilder was a very good book to read.I liked how feo was closer to wolves than humans and how she cared for them a lot.Katherine Rundell wrote the story in a way that you could picture the characters in your head.

I would definitely recommended this book to kids aged 11-14 because it was really exiting to read.

Aniqah gave The Wolf Wilder 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Joel from Benton Park:

This book gives hope and inspiration to all. It has a good plot with many twists and involves an unexpected relationship between humans and wolves. The book was an easy to read, enjoyable book which I loved. Katherine Rundell is a genius of an author and should be given as much praise as possible

Joel gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

tom from leeds east acadamy :

Such a good book couldn't stop reading it for hours looking forward to seeing some other books

tom gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Lauren from Benton Park School:

This book was very gripping and had many sides to it. We saw how a Russian girl lived in danger and how she coped with it. The wolves reflected her mood as if she was happy, the wolves were too. This book enchanted me and it was difficult to put it down.

Lauren gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Tioluwa from Abbey Grange academy :

I really enjoyed Wolf Wilder, it was an interesting and meaningful book, showing how love and hope can go a long way. I liked the imagery used to describe the settings in Russia (where it was set). The story made me eager to know what was going to happen next; I kept on guessing what was going to happen in the story.

The characters did feel quite real because of the way they were described and I could easily create a picture in my head of what they looked like or how they acted.

I really like how the author, Kathrerine Rundell, ended the story, it made me so happy for the characters, however It was quite sad but I liked that.

I recommend this book for people who like adventure, animals and things like that.

Tioluwa gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

SAMHITA from ROUNDHY HIGH SCHOOL:

This is book is so awesome. It is super adventurous and thrilling and magical. most amazing book I have ever read. I will suggest this to a friend.

I love this book personally because it shows the power of a girl and mystery.

SAMHITA gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Eleanor from Boston Spa:

I found this book quite boring although it is well written. This book has an intriguing title which draws you in, it also tricks you into thinking that the book is interesting but the book is not as interesting as you think.

Eleanor gave The Wolf Wilder 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Katie from King James School :

This book is emotional, captivating and exiting. This is a book that had a huge emotional impact on me because I constantly had mixed emotion for every character, and I felt all the emotion they felt, such as a strong hate for General Raklov.

Thankfully I have never been in a situation such as this, but Katherine Rundell made you feel like you were in Feo’s shoes experiencing her tragic story. Feo’s unconditional love for the wolves even though she couldn’t control them showed the strong friendship and loyalty that this book is all about. In this book the wolves were described very well, I loved how the book emphasised that they were free and uncontrollable but safe if you were kind to them.

The unlikely friendship between Liya and Feo gives the reader hope. The sacrifices Liya makes for Feo shows the true loyalty of their friendship and the determination to make Russia a better place.

The snowy, magical scene in this book gives it a classical fairytale feel but it has a few modern twists. I loved this book and how it made you feel like you were there with Feo and the wolves experiencing the tragic events with them.

Katie gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Matthew from Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College:

The Wolf Wilder is an amazing book. It has a creative and original plot and I totally agree with every professional review. The idea is totally original but surprisingly simple. My one complaint is that the plot line is foreseeable and has no major twist (I would give it a 4.5 if that was possible). despite this it is really quite a gripping book.

It comes from humble beginnings, explodes with action and and an emotional and action-packed book. I would recommend it.

Matthew gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Lewis from Allerton Grange:

What an amazing book. I was pleasantly surprised with the action packed battles and heartfelt alliances between the people starred. It shows how the wolves of Russia were tamed and spoiled by the wealthy inhabitants of surrounding areas and were sent of to the 'wilders' to be made wild and free again. Usually they were sent off because they attacked a member of staff or a valuable object. The originality of this book is incredible and Katherine (the author) has done something that all novelists should do- Think out of the box. I have no criticism for this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. This is a book which I will always remember.

Lewis gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Charlotte from Benton Park Secondary School:

This book epitomises hope for me with its detailed characters and twisting plotlines that were so easy to follow and yet so easy to get lost in. I would recommend this to anyone and its definitely one of my favourites. I am definitely going to pursue Rooftoppers.

Charlotte gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Miriam from Allerton High:

The Wolf Wilder is the best book on the shortlist that I have read so far. I have read Rooftoppers, Katherine Rundell’s other book, before the awards and loved it. When I picked up The Wolf Wilder, I was really hoping that it was the same. It certainly was and I loved it.

Feodora lives in Russia with her mother. Feo is training to be a wolf wilder- someone who gradually trains wolves to get rid of their domestication and let their instincts kick in instead. When General Rakov takes power (as the Tsar’s son is ill), everything goes downhill for Feo, her mother and the wolves. Feo goes on the run, meeting new people and communities on the way.

This book was very captivating and thrilling but was still poignant and moving. I think The Wolf Wilder shows how important it is to fight for the things you love and to have courage in tough times. I also liked the focus on the relationships the characters had in the book. Feo was friends with boys in the book and I thought it was good that Katherine Rundell kept them as friends. I was almost expecting her to have them go into a romantic relationship (which is a bit cliche) but the fact she didn’t made the book better. The descriptions of Russia in the book was beautiful. One of my favourite things that the books described was colours pouring out of the windows and onto the snow (as show on the cover). I think that this was a really unique description that definitely captured my imagination.

Overall, I really loved The Wolf Wilder and I think you should give it a read! Fans of The Wolf Wilder would also like Rooftoppers, her other book.

Miriam gave The Wolf Wilder 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Aliyah from Allerton Grange High School:

This book portrays the fact that in times of need. No one can be trusted.

Aliyah gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

tanveer from the co operative academy of leeds:

i think this book was very meaningful because it sent the message that if you stand up for things you love you can achieve anything. i think this because Feo really cherished and treasured her wolves and fought for their lives whilst risking her own.despite the fact that she faced many tragedies she carried on to fight for their freedom and be treated like any living thing should be treated. the pure and angelic snow emphasizes on how pure and true Feo's love for her wolves is.

tanveer gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Sophie from King James's School:

I found wolf wilder a great read. In some places I found it very sad and in other places I found it funny when Feo poked General Rakov in the face. I really liked how it felt like Feo loved her wolves so much that she would do anything for them.

Sophie gave The Wolf Wilder 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Freya from Boston Spa school:

My first impressions of the book were that it was a dark, dreary and dull book. The first fifty pages of the book were extremely slow, but the action sped up, soon after that.

I really like the way Feo is described. She is a stormy, unique girl, who has a passion for wolves. Rakov is described graphically. He is a cyncal character, who I despise. I would recommend it to anyone who likes different books.

Freya gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Shauna from Corpus Christi:

It is more of a 3.5 but the relationship between ilya and feo is really well done and those characters have excellent development. But many other characters arent really described.

Shauna gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Josie from Guisley School:

It's very gripping and you feel attached to the wolves. I wished that I had a wolf too. Feo has a mission but she picks up loads of friends and adventures on the way.

Josie gave The Wolf Wilder 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Kaya from Allerton Grange school:

Wolf Wilder is one of the best books I've ever read! It gripped me the whole way through. My favourite character is Feo she's so lucky to live around wolves!

Heather from King James's School:

I really enjoyed this book because it is really emotional, it made me laugh and cry at the same time. I loved the friendship and loyalty throughout the book and I liked the fact that her best friends are animals because I can emphasise with this as I really like animals. I think the setting is really magical and fairy tale like; it is written so well that I feel as if I have been to Russia. Also, I love the moral to the book- all you need is strong will, a good reason and a lot of resilience. I think it is very inspirational.

Jenna from King James's School:

I found this book captivating and exciting. A fast paced struggle of a young girl accompanied by wolves and a boy to save those she loves makes for an excellent story of friendships and trust.

I enjoyed this book because it was action-packed with suspense gnawing at the edges. It had you at the edge of your seat, often filled with emotion as you follow the young girl, Feo. I enjoyed how well-rounded the characters were. The book helped me empathise with the adolescent heroine, because although (luckily) I have never been put in her position to be able to relate, the author described her and her plight so well, you couldn’t help putting yourself in her shoes.

The only thing I would change was the character of the boy who accompanied Feo. He seemed to be very weak, then suddenly very strong with nothing really in between. I found this vexed me for I would have enjoyed watching the boy go through the journey slowly. Others may disagree with me, but that was how I found it. This also prevented me slightly from imagining the boy’s features for a while.

All in all I thought the book was a well-written, fun book for those who are 9 years old and above. I would recommend it because I really enjoyed the content and how the book made me feel, which was emotional and satisfied. The book left me wanting a little more, so I would enjoy a sequel. Despite this, I think Katherine Rundell did an excellent job.

I give this book 4 stars out of 5.

Hafsa from Leeds City Academy:

I loved the book it was really detailed and I loved the part where she would fight for a wolf in the war and when she was training and how hard it was I could empathise with all of the characters which helped to compensate for the fact that I couldn't relate to the landscape-having only experienced snow that doesn't cover a shoe. I love your books.♥♥♥☺☺☺♥♥♥

Eloïse from Benton Park:

I think this was an excellent book, which was inspirational but exciting. I really liked all of the characters and the landscape. I also think it was quite emotional. It was very good and I think the only way to make it better would be to add more of a battle at the end.

Kira from Benton Park:

The Wolf Wilder is one of the best books that I have ever read. It is exciting and adventurous. It was enjoyable and pleasing to read. The cliff hangers left you on edge all the way through and makes you want to read on. I loved this book and can't wait to read the rest of this years selection and Rooftoppers.

Joel from King James's School :

The wolf wilder is a book filled to the brim of hope and inspiration. It shows that, even in the bleakest of times and places, life can still thrive and that you don’t need to have an army to change your future. All you need is a strong will, a good reason and a lot of resilience. This is one of those books that you feel better after having read it than you did before.

I could empathise with all of the characters which helped to compensate for the fact that I couldn't relate to the landscape-having only experienced snow that doesn't cover a shoe. Despite this, the descriptions used to describe the land did allow me to picture it in my head and this really helped the story be as magical as it was.

I liked the cover of the book and the fact that it was a hardback somehow contributed to the overall experience of reading it. Overall, an unforgettable read that will stay with me for a long time. I will give it a 4 out of 5.

Neve from Allerton High School:

The wolf wilder is a fantastic read it has the vibe of a totally original book but it also has a slight touch of that old book that you have on your shelf that you read all the time and never grows old. It shows how courageous people can be when they have lost something and want to get it back. Somehow it is able to make you feel like you are there in the snowy woods of Russia with Feo and the wolves (not forgetting the pup). It really touched me how some people actually do hate these spectacular creatures that are so close to extinction and want to kill them. When I picked up this book I thought it was going to be an emotional read and I was right but it was also amazing it showed how you can act fearless when really you are terrified about what will happen next. I totally recommend this to other people that love lots of adventure in a book and not being able to foreshadow what will happen next.

Erin from King James's School:

I thoroughly enjoyed Wolf Wilder, it made me cry in parts including Rakov's sinister nature towards both animals and people. I had a deep regard for Feo's bravery and her need toward family. I like the fact Feo didn't think she needed a friend and wolves were good companions because that is how I feel towards animals too.

Adam from Abbey Grange Academy:

Feo is a wolf wilder. This means that when wolves misbehave and are sent away from their owners she is responsible for bringing them back into the wild. However, her mother is disliked by the rulers of Russia and this means she is sent to prison. This tale is about how she gets her mother back.

This was one of the best books I have ever read. I thought that the general idea it was based around was unusual which made the book extremely interesting.

However, although the plot line was interesting it was very bland and basic to the reader and although it has tried to incorporate a complex plot I think it has failed to do it.
