Who Wrote It?

Simon James Green was born in Nottingham and now lives in London. He went to Cambridge University where he studied law, but much preferred writing to becoming a lawyer.

Besides being an author, Simon also writes screenplays and also directs and has been involved in West End productions such as West Side Story and The Rocky Horror Show.

Noah Can’t Even is his first book if you don’t include the one he typed on his Gran’s typewriter when he was aged 12. That was called Toxic Danger, but didn’t quite manage to secure a book deal.

What's It About?

Painfully geeky Noah Grimes thinks his best chance at social normalcy is to strike up a romance with Sophie. But his plans are hopelessly derailed when his best (and only) friend Harry kisses him at a party. That's when things go from bad to utter chaos.

Fact File

Things Simon likes are coffee, After Eight mints and not going to the gym.

Things he doesn’t like: bad manners and quinoa.

Hannah from King James's School:

I found the book was easy to read but took time because I found that the storyline was constantly going off track, in addition to this I found that I couldn't properly relate to any of the character but I could still sometimes understand their actions.

Hannah gave Noah Can't Even 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crash by Lisa Drakeford.

Deaven from Guiseley school:

I did not enjoy reading this book, this is because I felt it rambled on and did not focus on a certain aspect or storyline. As well as this the book was overly cringy. In addition,I do not belive this book portrays a realistic view of a closet gay person, and instead enforced certain stereotypes , such as gay people always falling in love with straight people.

Deaven gave Noah Can't Even 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Countless by Karen Gregory.

Emily from King James's School:

I really liked this book. Most of the time I found it really funny but sometimes it was quite serious.I couldn't relate to Noah at all but I still thought that the book was good.My favourite character was probably Harry.

Emily gave Noah Can't Even 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crash by Lisa Drakeford.

Tessa from Cardinal Heenan High School:

I found this a very interesting read. It was an unusual perspective but quite well done, however I thought that it was a bit over the top at times and often taken out of context too much.

Tessa gave Noah Can't Even 3 out of 5 and now plans to read All About Mia by Lisa Williamson.

River from Royds School:

This book was very humorous and relatable, as the story follows Noah during his high school years. Many themes are explored in this book, such as neglect, maturing and love.

River gave Noah Can't Even 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Troublemakers by Catherine Barter.

Poppy from King James's School:

Noah Can't Even is a very unusual read. If you have read the book, I'm sure you can understand, from the perspective of a teenage girl you wouldn't receive the same experience as a male of similar age, however, the novel did manage to turn it self around in that it soon distracted me from it's more questionable moments with it's unpredictable and interesting storyline. I think Noah is portrayed as a relatively immature character for his age because he doesn't understand his feelings and denies them throughout the entire book thinking them to be unnatural and wrong. It is evident here that nobody has ever taken the time to explain how normal his feelings are and that he isn't doing anything wrong for feeling them. Overall, I don't believe it would be fair to judge this book on how much I enjoyed it, as this isn't my preferable type of read (note that this isn't me criticising the book as I actually enjoyed it much more than expected) but the quality of the writing, it's interesting perspective and the storyline itself have earned it this score.

Poppy gave Noah Can't Even 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Troublemakers by Catherine Barter.

Josie from Guiseley High School:

Before I read this book, people told me that it was really cringy but I really liked it. Throughout the whole book, I was hoping for Noah to go to Harry and it kept me gripped as the story developed, bringing many plot twists and surprises

Josie gave Noah Can't Even 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Countless by Karen Gregory.

Bethany from Crawshaw Academy:

I liked this book but I wouldn't say that I loved it. It is quite funny and makes you not want to put it down because you are constantly guessing what is going to happen and it you are right. I would recommend it to people that like these types of books.

Bethany gave Noah Can't Even 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Thornhill by Pam Smy.

Jem from King James's School:

This book, though explicit in places, gave a clear view into the life and struggles of a somewhat immature, geeky teenage boy. It is believable and realistic and Harry and Noah's friendship seems real. I recommend this book to anyone.

Jem gave Noah Can't Even 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Thornhill by Pam Smy.

Zach from Prince henrys grammar school:

I thought this book was well written and had a great story line as it kept me guessing throughout although finding letters hidden in your mums wardrobe is a bit cliche but apart from this it was original and funny.

Zach gave Noah Can't Even 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crash by Lisa Drakeford.

Grace from Prince Henrys Grammar School:

I really liked this book. I liked the writing style and the humour of the book made me laugh a lot.

Grace gave Noah Can't Even 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Countless by Karen Gregory.

Miss from Cardinal Heenan:

I really enjoyed this book - it really reminded me of the struggles of being a teenager and worrying so much about what people at school would think about the choices I made. It was a great story, showing the importance of being true to yourself and sticking with your friends through tough times.

Miss gave Noah Can't Even 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Countless by Karen Gregory.
