What's It About?

Luke Manchett lives just outside a small town in the north of England. He plays on the school rugby team, has a mum who believes in healing crystals and he harbours a huge crush on one of the girls at his school. When he receives a letter one day to tell him that his absentee father has sadly passed away, he is sad but not devastated. When he’s called to the offices of his dad’s solicitor and discovers he’s inherited millions of pounds, all he can think of is the flashy sports car he’s going to buy to impress the girl he fancies. He happily signs the documents the solicitor flashes in front of him even though one of them is made from goat-skin vellum, which, frankly, should have sounded some alarm bells. Soon Luke discovers he’s inherited more than money from his dad: he’s also inherited a Host of eight vengeful ghosts. Now he has just thirteen days to solve the riddle of his dad’s necromancy notes to keep the spirits from revolting.

Miles from Abbey Grange Academy:

A great book by a great author. Thank you Leo Hunt.

Miles gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Freya from Boston Spa School:

13 Days of Midnight is not like most books! When I read the back it made me want to read the whole thing. The content is quite unique and I have never read anything like it.

I really like the way the author described Ham (his features) and how he becomes more important to Luke than he originally seems.

Freya gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Maya from Boston Spa School:

I think that although 13 Days of Midnight was quite a dark and spooky book to read, the plot was quite interesting. I liked the way that Elsa was described as you could actually imagine what she would be like in real life.

I don't really like scary books that are like this. Last year I also did the Leeds Book Awards and there was a book called Gabriel's Clock. I found that both of these books were very similar. 13 Days of Midnight is described very graphically, meaning that you can get the whole picture of the setting in your mind.

I found that this book was very good at the start, but when it neared the middle and end, it was very repetitive and I couldn't engage with it like I could with some other books.

I do like the way, though, that the characters and The Host were described; but this is not a normal book that I would enjoy reading.

I would recommend this book to older children who like a bit of action and horror while they are reading.

Maya gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Elisabetta from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

This book overall exciting and both dark. It wasnt of my liking but i did enjoy the characters. Elza was my favourate because she had a strong personality.

Elisabetta gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Lloyd from King James's School:

When Luke’s father unexpectedly passes away, he is asked to meet with his Dad’s lawyer to collect his belongings. When Luke finds out he’s going to inherit 6million he is overjoyed. However the cash comes with a catch...

Thirteen Days of Midnight is a brilliantly witty book filled with twists and turns. Although I have read a number of ghost stories, this one was totally unique because I really liked the idea of the Host and how every ghost is completely different from each other.

My favourite character from the Host is the Judge as I liked his personality and even though he worked for the Shepherd, he still tried to help Luke secretly; but I wish he could have stayed. I liked Luke as a person but I would have read the contract first.

I was hoping for a slightly different ending however I would rate it 4 out of 5.

Lloyd gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

codie from leeds east academy:

I think that this book was an amazing read. it was a thrilling adventure through the story but not my kind of book though I would recommend to others.

codie gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Jake from King James's School:

I was surprised with this book as I thought it would be a bit of a droll horror experience like watching an omnibus of Psychic Detectives or Ghost Hunters, but, it ended up being a way better, thrilling, rollercoaster experience.

I wouldn’t have normally picked this book up as I would have just thought that it’s not possible to make a good novel all about ghosts (the cover did it no favours either), but after reading the first two chapters I realised that I shouldn’t get into my normal habit of jumping to conclusions as it really blew me away.

I thought that the descriptions in the book were exceptional as it gave you enough information for the reader to picture the scene or enough to imagine characters faces but not so much that the book became slow paced and boring.

My favourite character was Elza as I like it when you see a mysterious person in books with no information about them except the fact that everybody dislikes them suddenly open up so that you can see what they are really like and you get to understand their personality (I liked the dog too, don’t ask me why as I don’t know myself). The only thing I didn’t like about Elza and Luke is the cliché that a popular person and an unpopular person end up being forced to work and talk together while maintaining their normal personas to everyone else.

The only question I wish was properly answered in the book is why Elza can see ghosts too. I went through the whole book trying to figure out why she could see them, expecting the book to reveal a definitive answer to me by the end; it sadly did not.

Despite that unanswered question I don’t think I would read the next book as I think that sequels usually end up spoiling the previous book or film, however, if I hear some good reviews from people who do read it I may end up giving it a chance.

Jake gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Luke from King James's School:

This book is about a boy who has just inherited three million pounds from his father. But little does he know that he has also inherited his father’s host of eight ghosts (which some aren’t who they seem). Under the constant pressure of exams, being a normal school boy, being on the school rugby team, being as cool as he possibly can when he is around the girl he fancies and at the same time managing a whole host of eight inherited from his father, Luke struggles to keep up with it all. Will Luke manage to keep the host in his control whilst being under the impression of being a normal school boy?

My favourite character was Luke because he just seemed like the sort of person that you would like and that he is managing a host of eight whilst creating an excellent impression that he is a ‘normal’ school boy. The characters did feel real to me because I think it was written extremely well to (sort of) re-create a normal teenage life and mould it around his ideas. This story did keep me guessing because the host are ghosts so you never know when they might turn up. My favourite part of the part of the book was when he was discovering his host because it was in so much detail you could imagine it better than if it wasn’t written in as much detail. I think the part where Luke is discovering his host in the early points was a tense scene because so much happened it was nerve wracking to turn the page. This book, in my opinion, wasn’t funny enough or sad enough to make me laugh or cry. This story did grip me with the tenseness of it because you never knew what would happen next and if you try and predict it then you would be surprised at the outcome of the story line.

I think that the author could have made the ending a little bit lengthier because I think all the events that happened just finished all of a sudden.

I think this book is for 11-14 year olds because then they are not too old to make the most out of it and they’re not too young to enjoy it. I think my advice would be that read this book in daylight-don’t read it at night it makes it even tenser. Other than that I think this is possibly the best book I have read.

Luke gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

abbigale from corpus christi catholic primary:

thisbook is amazing its like a real adventure.

abbigale gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charlie from Abbey Grange Academy:

I enjoyed this book for a number of reasons. It was exciting and had an ingenious backstory of the characters. I liked it when it was in Ham's perspective and how he sees life.👍🏻

👹👻

Charlie gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Becca from Abbey Grange Academy:

This is a really exciting, and gripping book about a boy called Luke. His father has recently died and he inherits $6 million, along with some other unexpected extras. The book ends up very dark and twisted, it really shocked me. I never thought I enjoyed this horror genre of book, however this book really surprised me as I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I will be looking to the sequel.

Becca gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Aimee from pricehenrys:

not my type of book but it was okay

Aimee gave 13 Days of Midnight 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Elpida from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

Amazing book that really griped me. I docked one point due to the fact that the beginning was a bit boring however the book eventually caught on and I enjoyed the twisting plots. The overall description of the characters was very detailed which enabled me to visualise the characters better. I would definitely read this book again.

Elpida gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Maria from The Morley Academy:

The story overall was good and the descriptions of the characters made you believe and sense what they looked like. However,in the middle of the story I found the plot confusing. I don't know why but I think it was because I didn't fully understand the words. So throughout the story I was struggling to get into the book and I only mostly understood the beginning and end parts. It was about A boy called Dan whose father had died and he inherited 6 Million but there is catch-8 ghosts which want to murder him.So then he makes friends with Elza (his classmate) and they figure out a solution to get rid of the ghosts so they do it and Dan meets the Devil and asks the Devil to get rid of the ghosts and bring back his father. He then goes back to normal living the life he lived before all of that happened.

Maria gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Robert from Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College:

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that it was original, exciting and one I'd read again. It's a combination of humour and seriousness and this works very well. The only thing was, the story sort of just ended. It was a nice outro after the proper end, but it just sort of floated away at the actual end. However, I would still recommend reading this book.

Robert gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Ella from Prince Henry's Grammar School:

I really enjoyed this book. This book is especially for readers who enjoy thrilling activity and super natural events. I recommend you read this book.

sophie from king james's school:

I found 13 days of midnight a spooky book but also a great book. It contains plenty of twists and turns that keeps you wanting more. I am thoroughly excited for the next book to come out.

sophie gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

chloe from temple moor high school:

I enjoyed this book because it started of slow and then got more exciting when he found out he could have $6 million. I was really excited when the ghost gradually introduced themselves to Luke.

chloe gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Esben from Roundhay high school:

The book is not very interesting. The character descriptions were not very good. I think an aspect off why i didn't it is because i don't like horror very much. It was not a fun read.

Esben gave 13 Days of Midnight 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Lewis from Allerton Grange:

I can't say much about this book for it really didn't get to me. The roles of characters and most events were predicted. Apart from that, it's a generally good idea and the twist of his Dad's lawyer becoming the devil is quite ingenious. I probably wouldn't recommend this to my friends because I don't feel like its fast paced enough for readers my age. I gave this book a 2 out of five because I was honestly disappointed. PLEASE NOTE:This is constructive criticism and I'm not having a dig at the author.

Lewis gave 13 Days of Midnight 2 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Anika from King James's School:

13 Days Of Midnight was a thrilling, captivating book that I adored. the genre was perfect (mystery, adventure)the sort of story I would read - although I love mystery this didn't influence my opinion alone.

The plot was a very original idea, the inheritance of £6 million with a unexpected eight killer ghosts is an idea not thought of. I liked all of the characters that surrounded Luke Manchett such as Holiday or Elza... they were nicely complimented in the story and fitted together. I really liked Elza as Luke and Elza were pretty much polar opposites. The more time they spent together, the better friends they became. It was anticipated that the reality would would end up like that; but it still bought great outcomes.

His dad as a necromancer was an ideal fit and relation to the ghosts: another splendid touch to the story line. I loved the last chapter because there were a lot of questions answered that made the book every bit more special.

If there's one thing to criticize it would be that in some of the sections of the book there was too much information to process and it began to get all too much, except for that it was fine.

I'm extremely delighted that soon there will be a sequel, a prequel would be amazing too, just to know their background story. There are plenty of unanswered questions that I am hoping to discover in the forthcoming book. An incredible, gripping read.

Anika gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Meah from Guiseley high school:

this book was not my usual choice of book genre-horror, but i think that i like these books now. the book sent a shiver down my spine every time i picked it up from the description of all the characters and settings

Alice from King James's School:

Despite it not being my favourite type of book, I really enjoyed reading 13 Days of Midnight. It is a very action-packed book with a great storyline. I really liked the character of Elza because I think she is loyal, strong and unique. I also liked all the twists in the plot, especially the one at the end, after Luke attempts to summon the devil.

However, I thought the character of Holiday did not add much to the book and wasn't really necessary.

I enjoyed reading this book and would like to see a sequel or perhaps a prequel explaining in more detail what happened to Luke's dad.

Alice gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Aiden from leeds east academy:

this book is very interesting and I would like to read more from Leo hunt I would recommend this for people who like ghost stories. Also I don't think I will ever read a better book.

Aniqah from Allerton Grange High School:

13 days of midnight was a very enjoyable book and it kept me hooked throughout the whole story. I really liked the storyline to it. Also I liked that two really different people became friends.

I would recommended this book to people who like stories about ghost and even those who don't because I didn't really like ghost stories but I really liked this book.

Aniqah gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Katie from King James School :

I really enjoyed this book because it was exciting and emotional. In the beginning I thought it was just going to be another book about a teen or child that got a ridiculous amount of money, and became selfish and greedy. However as the story unfolds I saw that this assumption was false. This book was really about friendship loyalty and love.

I did feel that Holiday was an irrelevant addition to this book because she serves no purpose to the storyline. To me she was just a character to pad out the book. Apart from that however this book was an amazing read.

I liked how when Elza first asked Luke if he would like help he was reluctant because he thought she was a weird person that a ‘popular’ person shouldn’t be hanging out with. But by the end they had a strong friendship and worked well as a team.

I liked Ham’s strong character, even though he is just a dog he showed bravery and loyalty. I don’t think that the chapter when Luke was In Ham’s body had to be so long, because it was fairly repetitive and there wasn’t much meaning behind it.

I would like to have a sequel to this book because it left on a cliff hanger. I would like to know what happens to Luke, why Elza can see ghosts and what happens to Luke’s parents.

Katie gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Joel from King James's School :

I approached this book with the pre-conceived idea that I would hate it because it was about the supernatural. I NEVER read these books off my own accord and so I was slightly wary of reading this. However, I am glad I did read it because of how superbly it was written.

The original idea, as I explained in the above paragraph, was not to my liking but the way in which this was expanded upon was brilliant and the characters were written in such a way that I could easily empathise with them. This helped ground the book and pulled it away from being too unbelievable.

If Leo Hunt writes again I will be sure to read it for I do think that he has talent, though hopefully next time it won’t be about ghosts. I will give it a three out five.

Joel gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Jenna from King James's School:

I found this book entertaining and captivating. It wasn’t my favourite, purely because I don’t normally read and enjoy this particular genre. This book was no exception. Despite this, I found the book fun and interesting and would recommend this to people who enjoy this type of book.

The story is set when the meet the young protagonist Luke, a boy of sixteen who has inherited £6M from his late father. Unfortunately, he also inherits eight ghosts who want him dead. He and his friend Elza will embark on a quest to save their town from the murderous ghosts. This is a great story line and I thought it was written very well, still managing to focus on the aspects of teenage life, which I thought was an excellent touch.

I wasn’t too keen on the character of Holiday. She was merely there at the beginning to be heart-throb for Luke, but otherwise served no other purpose, seeing as the boy got together with another girl. I feel Holiday did not contribute to the plot at all and perhaps would’ve been better if she had simply not been there at all.

I am pleased to see there will be sequel, because the book kind of leaves the plot hanging. I would love to see answers to questions such as: Why can Elza see the ghosts? What happens to Mr Berkley? What about Luke’s father? Does Luke’s mother get better? I hope all these are answered in the eagerly-anticipated upcoming sequel.

Jenna gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Cameron from Leeds City Acedemy:

I was really hooked to this book because the constant thinking of what will happen next made me never want to put it down. It was a very exciting page turner because as soon as Luke meets the ghosts at the park whilst he was getting drunk with his friends on the slide they thought he was going nuts. I would recommend the book to any one who likes gripping horror stories about the dead and raising it whilst a plot with a devil takes place.

Cameron gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Joe from Allerton Grange:

This book was one of the best books I have ever read; it was intriguing, exciting and above all, brilliant. I would recommend this book to people of the age 11-13

Joe gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Kaya from Allerton Grange School:

Ham and Elza were my favourite characters because all the scenes involving them were exciting. I had no idea what the ghosts were up to until I looked on the back a quarter of my way through. Was not expecting the ending to be like that especially the part with Mr Berkley.

Kaya gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

William from King James's school:

I loved this book because of the mystery, ghosts and adventure.

I liked the character Luke because I could understand why the money motivated him but the adventure excited him. I didn't like the girl, Elza, because she seemed really weird. I liked the ending because it explained what happened to all the characters instead of ending on a cliff hanger. I have never read a book like this before and I'm glad I did.

William gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Josh from Benton Park:

13 Days of Midnight is a book I should recommend for you to read and you will find out why, if you read it. It has unexpected twists and turns in every chapter and is different from other stories. It has a host which are all different but all have a fantastic roll to play in in the book. When the sinister, dark adventure is getting to the great bits, you get lost in the book. Fantastic.

Josh gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Abigail from Benton Park`:

13 days of midnight was a very enjoyable but dark book. It had many twists and turns that always kept you on the edge. Although the chapters where Luke was inside his dogs Ham’s mind were very annoying and hard to read the book was interesting. It was quite hard to keep track of which member of the host was who but it kind of added to the mystery of the book. The character of Elza was interesting and broke away from the damsel-in-distress stereotype. Hs had a very Hermione like feel to her. I will definitely read the sequel.

Abigail gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charlie from Benton Park:

I’m not the biggest fan of horror, but I still really enjoyed this book. It is one of the best books that I have read. It has ghosts, mysteries, murder and a little bit of comedy. If you like any of those things than I would definitely recommend this book to you.

Charlie gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Dan from benton park:

I found this book really exciting and full of action. I thought the hosts were very different from each other and not what you would expect. Also there were some really good cliff hangers all the way though.

Dan gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Erin from King James School:

I found 13 days of Midnight a very sinister and dark book. It was confusing in some parts but otherwise very good. I loved the storyline, very well planned and thought out. My favourite character would be Ham as he reminds me of my dog at home. Luke was very brave and learned from his Host's mistakes. But, what I really loved about this book was the level of friendship and family in there. It connected to the reader in a deep way. This book is definitely not a book to read when becoming midnight

Erin gave 13 Days of Midnight 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Heather from King James's School:

I really enjoyed this book. It was an exciting supernatural adventure that I couldn’t put down. I loved the plot because it was really unpredictable and there was excitement on every page. I also liked the chapter numbers that represent the days, I think it is an original idea that works really well with the book. In addition, I like the friendship and loyalty throughout the book. However, it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. Also, I thought the author introduced things at random points of the book which I didn’t really like. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to someone else.

Heather gave 13 Days of Midnight 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

AbuZarr Yousaf from Co-operative academy of leeds:

I would give this book 5 out of 5. this book has murder, ghouls, mysteries and horror with every turn of a page and I would recommend this to anyone who likes reading these types of books in their spare time. Also I would like this book to become a series and not just about ghosts and ghouls but also about big axe welding maniacs, psychopaths and also about some of his friends turning into a werewolf when the moon is full and I would like the dog to be added as more of a dog who participates more in the story, mysteries and when they go look for clues!!!

I also think the only two bad things about the story was that Elsa wasn't a necromancer but she only had double sight and I think the next front cover could have a bit of more detail and maybe have Elsa and Ham the dog on the front cover.

AbuZarr Yousaf gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Scott from King James's School:

This book was one I never really got into. I felt that it was, perhaps, one of those books that you feel you didn’t enjoy as much as you know that very many other people will. I just know that this is a book that has a huge audience. I know people that would love it, and I will definitely recommend it to them.

I, however, didn’t enjoy the book as much as they would, and thought that the reactions of characters could do with a bit more thought. If Leo Hunt comes up with more ideas of this kind in the future, he has the potential to be great. His story, in my opinion, was a good one, only with a few small flaws.

I did think, though, that Ham was an effective addition, as was Elza’s ability to change the young Necromancer’s life throughout the book. A thought-provoking book with huge potential.

Scott gave 13 Days of Midnight 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Joe All Alone by Joanna Nadin.

Magnus from Roundhay highschool:

great suspence.creepy,chilling,exiting. definately a book to read!

I enjoyed it so much, I hope that it becomes a seires!

Magnus gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Yasmine from Benton Park Secondary School:

13 Days of Midnight-

13 Days of Midnight is a brilliantly witty book. Even at a very serious moment Hunt was able to insert little humours into it.

Luke Manchett found out his father’s death and has inherited $6M and 8 ghosts from the mysterious Mr Berkley, but everything doesn’t go his way.

My favorite character from the book is the Vassal, one of the Hosts, because at first he seems like an odd character, but once you continue diving into the book he gets interesting. I think another reason is because I (maybe some of you can too) relate to him, being loyal to his “friend” but in the end getting stabbed in the back for being loyal and honest, is a bit like my past.

However, I felt around ending was a bit rushed, like he really wanted to get into the exciting part (no spoilers here :3 and I wouldn't blame him) but in the end it was really interesting and to know about the reasons for the mishaps in the beginning was relieving. (For some reason, I misread a part in the book so that accidentally made me able to guess the ending, either that or it subconsciously slipped into my mind.) It does have slight bad language but I can see why it would fit in the 11-14 category.

To round it off I give it a 5/5 and I recommend it to people who like suspense and fantasy(and a bit of horror).

Yasmine gave 13 Days of Midnight 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.
