Who Wrote It?

Joanna Nadin was born in Northampton and is probably best known for her Rachel Riley series, which were loosely based on her own childhood, and her extremely funny Penny Dreadful books (which may not be). She has written about 35 books and she doesn’t seem to be stopping (luckily for us). Joanna previously worked as a policy writer for the Labour Party and was a special advisor to Tony Blair. She still does work as a speech writer so I wonder if we could ask her to work on the speeches for the awards ceremony. She is a winner of the Lancashire Fantastic Book award, and Blue Peter 'Book of the Month'. In 2011, Penny Dreadful is a Magnet for Disaster was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize.

It may be that Joanna inherited the writing bug because she is the  great-great-great-granddaughter of William Makepeace Thackeray, a 19th century English novelist.

What's It About?

When thirteen-year-old Joe is left behind in Peckham while his mum flies to Spain on holiday, he decides to treat it as an adventure, and a welcome break from Dean, her latest boyfriend. Joe begins to explore his neighbourhood, making a tentative friendship with Asha, a fellow fugitive hiding out at her grandfather's flat.

But when the food and money run out, his mum doesn't come home, and the local thugs catch up with him, Joe realises time is running out too, and makes a decision that will change his life forever...

Fact File

Joanna Nadin likes: Paris, prom dresses, junk shops, Ladybird books, cake, crisps, Cornwall, politics, high heels, horses, old songs, old dresses, her Grandma's fur coat, vinyl, the smell of old books, eating peanut butter from the jar, the bit where Johnny says ‘no-one puts Baby in a corner’.

She is best known for the Rachel Riley series of novels based on her own childhood. The series follows the comedic narration of a 13-year-old girl growing up in Essex.

Great book would recommend I'm not going to tell you what happens because you should really read this book yourself

Yasmine from Benton Park Secondary School:

It’s about a boy called Joe who has been left alone at home for a week as his mum is on holiday. But they’re running late.

I, personally, didn’t particularly enjoyed this book but I found this book rather interesting as it covered a topic that’s not usually talked about a lot. The start was portrayed well as it's typically something for a boy his age (around 12/13) and some parts of it was quite unrealistic which dragged it down a bit.

I give this book 3/5, and also recommend it to people who likes story with real life situations.

Yasmine gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charlie from Benton Park:

I loved this book! It is probably one of the best books that I have read. The plot was easy to follow. The only bit that I didn't like was the ending, which kind of spoiled it a bit.

Charlie gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Charlie from Abbey Grange Academy:

Joe all alone was a book with good plot and was excitinglbut only at a few points in the book. Ιt seemed like it dragged on for a while and used a large amount of language that was completely unacceptable for a children's вook. Also, the еиding wasn't explained very well.

Charlie gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charlie gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

George from Prince Henry Grammer School:

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but I thought that the ending really spoiled it, as it was very rushed. But apart from that it was very good.

George gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Charli from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

I really enjoyed this book because it kept you hooked throughout the period of time when Joe's mum and brother had not come back. It also really gripped me when Joe tried to escape from his town. However, the ending could of been a bit stronger by making it more detailed.

Charli gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Maimuna from Leeds East Academy:

This book was fantastic and I had really fun reading it as I was always eager to know what happened next!!

Maimuna gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Abigail from Benton Park:

I didn't really enjoy this book. Although it was well written and the characters were good I felt that there wasn't much of a storyline which made the story boring. The ending was good as it was a surprise plot twist.

Abigail gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Katie from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

Wow! This is my favourite book so far! It is fast paced and exciting.

Katie gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Zoe from Guiseley School:

It was certainly unexpected... I didn't think it was going to be slightly romantic. Which I did not particularly like. It was also quite confusing and needed a bit more work. But apart from that I thought it had a clever story line and exciting, especially towards different bits.

Zoe gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

charlotte from leeds city academy :

I like this book because it was interesting to reed. I would rate this book to any body that likes a bit of advancer in there books.

charlotte gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Maisie from Abbey Grange:

Joe all alone was quite a let down, I thought that there was no excitement within the book to engage the reader. I found that the book was repetitive and the ending predictable. I was not fond of some of the bad language used in the book as it was aimed for children. However, the storyline was different to most books I've read in the past, and I congratulate the author for that. Overall I would give Joe All Alone 3/5 because although it was quite boring at times, the storyline was something different which most authors choose not to write about.

Maisie gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Freya from Boston Spa School:

I have to say I wasn't impressed with this book. I didn't like the use of bad language in it, although it did give me an idea of the character's social standing and how kids today behave.

The plot was unrealistic; in reality parents wouldn't leave their child alone for two weeks in the house, by themselves with no food.

I wouldn't recommend this book but I give credit to the author for such a unique and quirky idea.

Freya gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Anna from Cardinal Heenan catholic high school:

Fantastic book with a unforgettable adventure. Although the begginging was a bit boring and hard to understand I loved this book.

Anna gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Tioluwa from Abbey Grange Academy:

This book was boring at the beginning however towards the ending it got better.

This book was good at making me feel sorry for the main character Joe but it was difficult to visualise him.

I liked the story line; it would have been better if it was more descriptive.

Tioluwa gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Becca from Abbey Grange Academy:

Joe All Alone is quite an unusual and unique book. It is about a boy called Joe, aged 13 years, who gets left on his own whilst his mum and step dad go on holiday. At the start of the book, he seemed to act like the age of 6 or 7, which was rather irritating as I couldn't empathize with the character. As a result I struggled to enjoy the story line as it wasn't very realistic. Furthermore I thought it lacked substance, and was deadly boring in some parts. It did get slightly more interesting towards the end, but overall I was thoroughly disappointed by the book, I thought it would be more interesting.

Becca gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Scott from King James's School:

I felt that, in writing this, Joanna Nadin has seized upon a storyline of a quality that we don't often see in modern fiction. The characterisation was certainly satisfactory, and I could picture Joe reasonably well.

The aspect of the book that induced the low score that I gave it was the way in which Joe thought. I read, primarily I think, to see how the characters think. My usual reads involve psychologists and psychological killings as I find these books easiest to track the thought processes of the characters. In Joe All Alone this taste wasn't satisfied. In this book, I didn't feel that the actions thoughts of this boy (who evidently saw the world in a very unique way) quite matched up with the way I would expect a boy such as Joe to be. Personally, I didn't feel that his mental processes were authentic and realistic in the way I like it. For this reason I couldn't relate to the book and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I could have done.

Not my sort of read. I have enjoyed other books that have dealt with these interesting and controversial subject matters. I have never, though, read anything quite so shocking with regard to the "home alone" aspect of it. I can't, personally, say that I enjoyed this book but I congratulate Joanna Nadin on her choice of plot line.

Scott gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Maya from Boston Spa School:

My first impressions of Joe all Alone was that it would be filled with excitement as it was a boy who was left alone by his parents whilst they go on a holiday.

I found this book quite repetitive and the ending was really predictable. I also hated the language used in this book; it is supposed to be a children's book. However, I did quite like the main plot and the storyline of this book, I had never read anything quite like it before.

The reason why have rated Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 is because I thought they should have put it in an older category, because of the language include in it. Although, I will give Joanna Nadin some credit, after all, she was the one who came up with the good idea of the plot of this book. It is though, quite an easy read...

I would recommend this book to some older readers...

Maya gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Aliyah from Allerton Grange :

Joe all alone portrays the idea of living alone with an 'abusive' parent. It also shows the kindness of other people.

Aliyah gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Elisabetta from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

Loved it!!! so sad when he runs out of food :[ but I would love to read it again!!!

Elisabetta gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Katie from King James School :

I liked the idea behind this book, however I felt like the delivery let it down. To me the plot was boring, I found most of the characters hard to picture. Especially Joe, However I could picture Asha’s character quite well. There was hardly any difference between the personalities of characters in this book and I found that because of this it was very dull. If the romance between Asha and Joe was not included in this book, I would've enjoyed it more. I feel like more twists should've been included, because I found it quite repetitive. There was little action in this book and because of that I didn't enjoy it at all.

Katie gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Hannah from The Morley Academy:

I've just finished Joe all alone. It is about a boy whose parents have gone on holiday to Spain without him and he has to manage on his own. He soon runs out of money and they don't come back on time so he is home alone with not enough money to survive. Nothing much happens in the chapters until you are about 3/4 of the way through and there isn't much ambitious vocab in it. Although I could relate well to the characters, it didn't draw me in as much as other books I have read.

Hannah gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Abbigale from Corpus Christi:

THIS a enjoyable book and paints an image in your head.

Abbigale gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

William from King James's school:

I thought that the storyline of Joe all alone was engaging but I felt it was a bit rushed. I felt J was a bit unreal, I would prefer more description to make him believable. I liked Asha because I could visualise her.

William gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Jenna from King James's School:

This was the shortest book by far, but I found it fun and entertaining.

It was a very good idea, worded nicely, but I felt like maybe the author strayed off-topic a little at times. Because of this, I found myself less engaged sometimes, but always found ways of recovering from 'zoning out'. When I was paying attention though, I was transfixed and found the book exciting. I enjoyed the story line and thought it was a brilliant decision for a book full of interesting (if maybe not described in the best way) characters whose lives held you captive to the story.

Jenna gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

sophie from king james's school:

I enjoyed joe all alone. I found the relationship between Joe and Asha funny. In my opinion I found it quite hard to visualise Joe.

sophie gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

megan from Leeds East Acadomy:

for starters the cover stands out...

it is smart

secondly I might just have pizza for bvreakfast

megan gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

chloe from leeds east academy:

It is a very interesting and funny book. Each chapter I could not wait to see how Joe would manage being left at home with NOBODY to look after him.

chloe gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Becky from leeds East Academy:

This was the best book I've read out of this section so far.The best two parts of this book is the fist part were you get to know about his past and when Joe falls in LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Becky gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Kiera from Crawshaw Academy:

I loved it!

Kiera gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

AbuZarr from Co-operative academy of Leeeds:

i loved thus book because it focused on one character and then another and another. Also I like when there is a cliff hangar in the middle and then all of a sudden someone comes and saves Joe from disaster.

The only thing that I would personally change is the front cover and also that he acts more mature when his mum and step- dad are in the house to when they are not in the house.

AbuZarr gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

kirena from leeds east academy:

The book was funny and interesting but not something I would read again but it was a really good book to read.

kirena gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Thomas from Temple Moor High School:

I really enjoyed this book because it felt sort of relatable but also WHY!? The characters were great for the setting. My only problem with this was how the storyline starts getting a bit repetitive at points. Despite this I find it a must-read.

Thomas gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Amir from roundhay:

great book,i loved it! at the start it was boring and doesn't get interesting and it involves some bad words. but other than that it was jarring. i was speechless.

Amir gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Daniyal from Roundhay high school:

Joe all alone book review

Joe all alone is a very creative idea of a book. As many people read the blurb and judge the book by that, you really need to read the book and you will get into in to it for definite.

Joe is a very intelligent and caring young boy. He will try his best at everything even if it means getting beaten up by a bully.

Asha is a young, pretty girl who is a bit nosy and loves to sing. Even though her mum does put work before her daughter, she always finds a way to make things better. She is very caring and looks after people very caringly.

Day by day, Joe and Asha slowly become friends. Someone is really bugging Joe and also something. Joe and Asha have a dangerous plan but what will happen and will it all work?

Daniyal gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Harry from Roundhay School:

Joe All Alone is fairly entertaining on the whole; it describes the character’s emotions very thoroughly, making you really feel for Joe. Joe’s feelings are really well portrayed, and it also stresses the reader out a bit in the process! The only thing that I’d fault about it is the lack of action throughout the time in which his parents are supposed to be away, because it’s not that interesting reading about him playing on the X-Box. However, this book is well written and really shows how things can go wrong without adults in charge.

Harry gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Luz from Allerton High School:

Joe All Alone didn't really appeal to me as the plot was very cliché - I feel like I have read the same story one hundred times, just with different characters. I think the whole story happened because Joe and his mum didn't say the few words that they could have said. If Joe went to the police, or his mum said 'Joe, Dean is trying to kidnap me', the whole story would have not happened and everything would have been fine. Also, Asha just happened to like the boy who she never met before - I mean, isn't there a more subtle way to do it? Perhaps a life saving moment? Also, the ending was really anticlimactic! His mum just came back, said oops, lost my passport, Deans still back there, lets go home! Yay! Apart from that, the book was great.

Luz gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Charlotte from Benton Park`:

This book was okay.At the beginning it was very boring as nothing really happened. I believe that to be a good writer the beginning of the book it vital as it determines weather the reader reads on. My favourite character was Asha because she was really friendly. I love the modern side to it. I recommend this book

Charlotte gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Anika from King James's School:

This book was not one of my favorites: the way it was written didn't allure me unlike some others. The idea was wonderful and full of potential but the delivery failed to please me. The lack of description showed itself up immensely, so my understanding was quite weak throughout the book. I don't have a favorite character: however Joe seemed a very likable character. The movie 'Home Alone' was linked and related to the book for me and almost seemed an exact replica. It was quite predictable and I felt it missed some major drama/interesting parts. The need for romance to occur was unnecessary for me; focusing on one point would be more to my liking.

Anika gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Meah from Guiseley high school:

THE COVER OF THIS BOOK LOOKS REALLY APPEALING TO A READER BUT AS THEY READ ON IT GETS A BIT CONFUSING AND HARD TO UNDERSTAND. I LIKED IT AND THE CHARACTERS IN IT BUT WAS A BIT CONFUSING

Meah gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Josie from Guisley School:

It was very touching and I liked the relationship between Joe and Asha. The only thing was it was a bit predictable. You knew what was going to happen. There was suspension when Dean and Joe's Mum didn't come back and how he had to survive alone. I liked that bit. I liked how Otis was very nice and welcoming as well.

Josie gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Alice from King James's School:

Although I liked the idea for this book, I found it quite hard to get into. I also found some of the characters hard to picture, especially Joe as I don't think there was enough description of him. Towards the end of the book, I started to enjoy it a bit more because there was more action and I liked how Joe and Asha got closer. My favourite character was Asha because she was loyal, practical and a very good friend to Joe.

This was not my favourite book on the list, but I did enjoy reading some parts.

Alice gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Alice from Cardinal Heenan:

This book is about a boy who was left in a house for a week but his parents never came back.

It was very exciting and you always wanted to read more. I would definitely recommend it.

Alice gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Elpida from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

Joe all Alone is an amazing book which I adore. The plot is very realistic which helps you understand it further. I gave this book a four due to the fact that the ending could have been more descriptive as it seemed rushed. Overall this book is amazing and I would read it again.

Elpida gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Kaya from Allerton Grange School:

Good book it did get slightly boring towards the end but I still enjoyed it. I don't think these kind of books are my type but I thought it was enjoyable anyway.

Kaya gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Lloyd from King James's School:

Joe All Alone isn’t the type of book I’d have read from looking at the cover and reading the blurb, but to my surprise I found it an interesting read. Although some parts of the book were quite repetitive, I enjoyed the drama. I liked Asha, as I thought she was a brilliant character to have in this book: practical, sympathetic, kind, everything a friend should be. The idea of the book was interesting but sometimes I was reluctant to pick it back up because some parts were dull and dragged on. I tried, but could not picture Joe, as not much description was given about him. Joe All Alone really wasn’t my kind of book.

Lloyd gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Matthew from Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College:

This is a book which portrays a young boy left alone. In some ways, the start is like many other modern books of the genre. There is a boy with a loving mother, taken over by a boyfriend who the boy hates. But this is where it changes. It is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller witch shows the desperation of a boy put in trying situation.

Matthew gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

soufia from allertong grange:

I loved it, could not put the book down. it was full of action and you could never get bored. that's why I gave it a 5 out of 5 I recommend this book to everyone who like comedy, romance and adventure. showed what a true teen would be saying.

soufia gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Jake from King James's School:

I could not put this book down, the reason being that had I set myself the challenge of reading it in one evening. However, if I hadn’t done that, it probably would have taken me a couple of weeks. It really wasn’t my cup of tea.

For starters, I prefer to have lots of description - but not too much - whereas this book just seemed to give you very little information about where Joe was and what was happening around him. Another thing was how a boy of around thirteen could be so naive about drugs. However, I liked all the characters in the book as they were mostly believable and because there was such a huge contrast of personalities between them. I didn’t see the point in making the two main characters form a relationship. It was nice to see them grow closer together although I couldn’t understand how two characters with such different personalities could go out together. One is rough and has an endless amount of gum, while the other one is just so wet. I thought the home-alone-no-rules concept of the plot was good and I was hooked by the blurb. I did like how Joe was never going to give up trying to live on his own without any help (except Asha) and the journey he went through. Apart from that, I really disliked the book.

Jake gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Aniqah from Allerton Grange High School:

Joe all alone wasn't the type of book that I would read because it didn't hook me into the story much.I wouldn't recommend this book to people who like the same types of books as me but I would definitely recommend this book to people who want to read a fun book.

Aniqah gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Joe from Allerton Grange:

this is a really good book that keeps you reading all the way from start to finish. There are many interesting twists and turns and a very good main character who id#s perfectly suited to this story.

Joe gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Tegan from co-operative Academy of Leeds:

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't the best but it was still exciting and made me want to keep reading. I liked how the feelings were expressed.

Tegan gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Matthew from The Morley Academy:

A good book until the ending which was a bit weird as it skipped a bit. A funny point was when Joe something in the toilet cistern. A good book but lacking something.

Matthew gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Eleanor from Boston Spa High School:

This book was just a slower version of home alone. The plot was as straight forward as it gets, completely predictable and the book didn't realy start until he met Asha; even after he met Asha the book was still slow and boring.

Eleanor gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Erin from King James School:

Joe All Alone had a very promising storyline, well written in some parts others lingered toward the boring side. I didn't have a favourite character in this book because I could never picture any of their faces apart from Otis. A good point about this book is that it told you to speak out when you want to be heard. I was looking forward to this book (because of the blurb) but when I got halfway through I found that maybe the author could've added a few really exciting parts.

Erin gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Deaven from Guiseleyschool:

This book was AMAZING it had a great plot. And is full of surprising twists and turns although at some points was hard to understsand

Deaven gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Heather from King James's:

Not my favourite book because I thought the plot was boring, nothing exciting really happened. Also I thought there wasn’t enough description of the characters. I didn’t like this because I couldn’t even picture Joe. I thought it was very unrealistic, especially the characters. No-one helps someone they barely know like Otis did and people don’t just walk in to a stranger’s house which is how Asha was introduced. I did like the idea though, I would be devastated if that happened to me. Overall, I didn’t like this book and I wouldn’t really recommend it to anyone.

Heather gave Joe All Alone 1 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Sinead from Cardinal Heenan:

The book is about a teenager whose mum and sort of step dad go on holiday for a week but don't return, this leads to him having to be independent person and taking care of himself in a mature manner. It was very realistic to a teenager's fears when they go through something you wouldn't expect.

I didn't like the fact that there there was multiple uses of swearing - it wasn't necessary!

Sinead gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Charlotte from Crawshaw Academy:

A quick and easy read.

Charlotte gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

laura from crawshaw:

i thought this book was quite interesting and I enjoyed it

laura gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Esben from Roundhay high school:

I did like it at the start because of the characters and the detail

but towards the end it got very repetitive and not enough action

Esben gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read 13 Days of Midnight by Leo Hunt.

Miss Brannan from The Morley Academy:

There were some humorous references and it made me want to read on to find out what happens, however, I felt the plot was a little simplistic and the ending a little abrupt. I would recommend to younger readers.

Miss Brannan gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Lewis from Allerton Grange:

The book is a fantastic and descriptive look into the occasionally inappropriate but funny insight of the mind and life of a casual 13 year old. It talks of him surviving through a beautiful but awkward relationship with the girl next door (Asha) whilst he deals with his parents maybe being away for a little too long in Spain. The author makes me feel really sympathetic for Joe and I really love that context. I love this book because I can really relate it to my 13 year old brother and it probably shows what he's thinking about. It also makes me think and is an absolute pleasure to read. I would definitely recommend this book to other children my age and slightly above. My only criticism is that the book is quite small and has rather large text for the suggested age category.

Lewis gave Joe All Alone 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Jessica's Ghost by Andrew Norriss.

Miss Busby from Corpus Christi Catholic College:

I read this book in one sitting. It's a great page turner!

How wonderful to read from the mind of a mixed-up thirteen-year-old boy who has been left alone to fend for himself for a week.

Things don't seem too bad for Joe at the beginning of the week as he can watch whatever he likes on tv, he can play on his Xbox all day and he befriends Asha who makes his heart flutter!

....Then things seem to go from bad to worse.

A heart-warming story of courage, survival and poverty.

Miss Busby gave Joe All Alone 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Crowham Martyrs by Jane McLoughlin.

Jennah from Allerton Grange High school :

I absolutely loved it !

it made you feel like you where in Joe's position not knowing what to do or what to say to people when they asked where your mother was !

It was very deep and meaning full. I never wanted it to end !

it is one of the best books I have ever read !!!

This book is about a teenage boy who gets left alone whilst his mum and her boyfriend go on holiday. Now Joe has to fend for himself until they come home. It may seem fun at the start but is Joe ready to face the dangers of the world by himself?

My favourite character was Joe because the way the author set the mood of the book he suits the part perfectly-on edge the whole time he’s alone. The characters did feel real to me because it perfectly describes how they are feeling and matching the feelings of a person who might be in that situation. The story kept me guessing because of the tenseness of what would happen and if something would happen... when? My favourite part of the book was when Joe meets Asha because it gives the feeling of friendship and happiness. I think when Asha has to go back home and Joe has to go back to school is written well because then it gets bad for Joe and you have to see how he copes with it. This book wasn’t funny enough or sad enough to make me cry or laugh. Because of the tenseness of what might happen the next day kept me reading. I think the author could have explained in more detail about Joe’s appearance. I think this book should be 14-16 because of the language involved and also you are not too old to have that adrenalin rush when someone isn’t who they seem or if something happens.

Joel from King James's School:

The idea behind this book was a good one and the book had promise. From the blurb I was excited to read the book because I could see there was potential for a winner. However, I was disappointed by the execution of the actual book and the way in which the plot was expanded upon.

I think that there could have been much more description as to how the main character felt every day and the way in which his ideas changed throughout the experience. I found it really hard to emphasise with the characters and I think this was due to the lack of description that was used.

Also, I felt that the whole thing should have been a lot simpler. Within a relatively short book there were the themes of neglect, abuse, love, bullying, racism and poverty. The book would have been better if only one was used-neglect. This would have given room for the characters and the emotions to have been expanded upon, which would have made the book a lot more sophisticated. In this case, less would have definitely been more.

To conclude, the blurb really sold the book for me, however I was greatly disappointed with what was between the covers. I would give the book a 2 out of 5, but only because the idea was good.

Joel gave Joe All Alone 2 out of 5 and now plans to read If You Were Me by Sam Hepburn.

Catherine from Allerton High School:

This book is interesting in the beggining and it doesn't give away what the plot is so it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The main character is Joe and his Mum and her boyfriend go on holiday, but later in the book you start to wonder if they will come back. It is a good book to read if you like realistic stories and books by Jaqueline Wilson.

Catherine gave Joe All Alone 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell.

Lauren from Benton Park High School:

This book was very misleading as the cover looked like the book would be a comedy however it was like a mystery. I loved the connections in it, and the plot was so exciting- I didn't want to put the book down! When I first read the book, I thought I wouldn't really like it however as I kept reading I began to really enjoy it. I think that Joanna Nadin made it hard to put down by making me feel sympathetic for Joe.

Joe All Alone was a great book to read and I really recommend it to people who like a plot twist!
