Who wrote it?

After doing a history degree Paul started working as a researcher for museums and publishers. He especially enjoyed his time as picture researcher with the Science Museum team which set up Bradford's National Museum of Photography in 1983 (now called The National Media Museum), and working as a researcher on Time-Life's excellent History of the World series.

Paul’s other books for young people include The Cabinet of Curiosities, Ausländer and Powder Monkey.

What's it about?

Alex lives in East Berlin. The cold war is raging and he and his family are forbidden to leave. But the longer he stays the more danger he is in. Alex is no longer pretending to be a model East German, and the Stasi has noticed. They are watching him. Alex is told that further education will be blocked to him. His summer job is mysteriously cancelled, and friends begin avoiding him. His parents start to realise that leaving the East may be the only option left to them, but getting across the Wall is practically impossible. And even if Alex and his family make it to the other side, will they be able to escape the reach of the Stasi? One false move will change everything for Alex and his family, for ever.

Outside of work Paul teaches a course in writing children's books at the MAC (Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham) and plays electric guitar with a variety of other musicians in the pubs and clubs of the West Midlands.

Curtis Jobling is an author and illustrator based in the UK. Working in publishing and animation he is possibly most (in)famously known as the designer of the BAFTA winning BBC show Bob The Builder, as well as creator of Frankenstein’s Cat. Early work in animation included model and puppet painting on Wallace & Gromit’s A Close Shave and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!

Curtis lives with his family in Cheshire, England, surrounded by a ridiculous collection of film and animation memorabilia.

Annabel Pitcher was born in 1982 in a small village in West Yorkshire where there were more sheep than people. She studied English Literature at Oxford and then had a few different jobs, including working on You’ve Been Framed, before retraining as an English Teacher, which she loved. My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece is her first book.

What's it about?

Ten-year-old Jamie hasn’t cried since it happened. He knows he should have – Jasmine cried, Mum cried, Dad still cries. Roger didn’t, but then he is just a cat and didn’t know Rose that well, really.

S. L. Powell was born in Shetland and by the age of seven she had lived in Somerset, Norfolk, Dorset, Australia and Dumfries and finally the Isle of Wight, where she stayed until she was grown up. She lived on boats for many years, but currently lives in a house in Oxford with her husband and daughter, and combines writing with working for a charity. Fifty Fifty is her first published book.

What's it about?

Gil's explosive relationship with his scientist father is brought to crisis point when he gets involved with Jude, a charismatic animal rights campaigner who is targeting his dad. At first, Gil relishes the chance to wind up his father, but he finds himself torn when he learns that his dad's research could save his mum's life.

Sarah was a geek at school; she was rubbish at sports but very good at everything else. She did have bad days, though: once she misunderstood a piece of English homework, and made such a mess of it that the teacher didn’t even mark it. Sarah was so angry that she went home and burnt the exercise book.

Sarah likes swimming in the sea, houseboats and mangoes, and dislikes swimming pools, fast cars and kiwi fruit.
